The Gift of Teaching

Becky Bays peered over the edge of her workbook as she finished reading that Sunday’s Bible lesson.  “But Rebekah loved Jacob more than Esau, and she would make a plan to help him get ahead.  To find out what that was, you’ll have to come back next week.”

I was in second grade and absolutely riveted.  Becky breathed life into Genesis in such a way that I could not wait to find out what happened next.  When I think back on where my love for the Bible began, I always arrive at this moment with a kind, creative Christian woman who loved the Lord and knew how to bring His word to life.

Teaching is tough work, and it isn’t for everyone.  James knew some wanted to teach out of “jealousy and selfish ambition”, so he warned them:  those who teach “will be judged with greater strictness” (James 3:1, 14).  Yet with the right motivation, teaching is something we should all seek to grow into, and it shows that we are maturing spiritually (Hebrews 5:12).  Paul said “the Lord’s servant” was characterized by being “able to teach” (II Timothy 2:24).  He listed teaching as above performing miracles, and he placed teachers alongside elders as gifts Christ gave us to build up His church (I Corinthians 12:28, Ephesians 4:11).

Our new Bible class quarter begins Sunday 9/1, and we are once again offered the gift of teaching to help us grow spiritually.  Prayerfully consider accepting this gift by participating in one or more classes – and making sure the children in your life are here for their classes, too!  You can learn more about each class on our website. Even if you can’t join in-person, you can follow along with many of them through our podcasts
